Loughrigg is a wide fell that separates the valleys of the Rivers Brathay, and Rothay, both of which flow into Windermere close to Ambleside.
There are many walks on Loughrigg. The commonest is to walk from Tweenways, through Ambleside Park and on to the minor road beyond via an arched bridge. A right turn on to the road, followed by a left turn about 100 yards later leads us to the old road over the fell. Nowadays it is tarmac road for about a quarter of a mile, before turning to a rough, wide track.
This route leads us through an old golf course, a 9 hole pitch and putt that was here until the late nineteen fifties. The old clubhouse is now a private residence. From there we simply continue along the track until it fords a steam, then turn right and follow a well worn path up the fell to the summit.
